Projects

“Throughout my sports journey I have obtained some valuable life experiences and learnt some worthy lessons as I’ve battled my way to get to the top. Now, as a role model, I want to share with others my personal stories of success and hardship in the hope that I can inspire and influence other peoples’ lives, because that for me is the greatest achievement.”

Inspiring and supporting young people, particularly those who aren’t as fortunate in life, is something that Jenna is very passionate about. She is involved in a range of projects, which are all ultimately aimed at “inspiring lives.” Read below to find out more about the work that Jenna does.

DKH Legacy Trust

Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy TrustJenna is currently working with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust in a range of ‘giving back to sport’ activities. Set up by Dame Kelly herself, the Trust aims to “Inspire young people to find and fulfil their potential in sport or in life through the workforce of elite sports performers.” As one of the athletes on the Trust, Jenna uses her experiences and skills to help young people to participate, stay in and excel in sport, and help disadvantaged young people to find and believe in their own talents.

Here are some of the projects that Jenna is actively involved in:

Get on Track

Comic ReliefFunded by Comic Relief, the 'Get on Track' programme gives vulnerable young people the chance to work with elite sports stars like Jenna. The programme provides stepping stones for vulnerable young people to volunteering, work placements and employment opportunities. They are supported through this process by elite sports mentors who, having experienced the highs and lows of world class competition, know what it is like to face adversity and overcome the odds to succeed.

London 2012 Young Leaders Programme

London 2012 Young Leaders ProgrammeThe London 2012 Young Leaders Programme, which is a major new personal development launched by London 2012 and BP in 2010, will give young people from across the UK the chance to make a positive change to their lives and local communities. The selected young leaders will then also have the opportunity to play a significant role in the delivery of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Jenna is one of the athlete mentors on this programme and will support the young people in their local communities up to the 2012 Games.

Making Headway

SkillforceDKHLT and Skill Force have joined forces to launch a new project called 'Making Headway'! Both organisations are utilizing sporting champions such as Jenna and ex-military personnel to improve the life chances of young people.

Future Jobs Fund

SkillforceThis is part of the Backing Young Britain commitment to support jobless young people. The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, along with it’s employment partner Premier Sport, provides new jobs for young people currently on Job Seekers Allowance in the sport sector, and with the help of the Trust’s elite athletes, provides support during the pre-engagement training of these young adults and mentoring whilst in their new role. Jenna’s role is to provide motivation and support to these newly recruited young people at Premier Sport and prevent them from dropping out when it gets tough.

RAMP

RAMPDelivered on behalf of Sport England in partnership with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, the Respect Athlete Mentoring Programme enables elite athletes and hard-to-reach young people to work together to bring about a change in attitude and behaviour. Using sport as a vehicle, Jenna uses her life experiences to guide the young people towards change, introducing them to new opportunities and activities within their local area. Jenna is currently working towards her Certificate for Mentoring in Sport qualification.

Sporting Champions

Sporting ChampionsSporting Champions is a Sport England initiative bringing world-class athletes face-to-face with young people to inspire and motivate them. The scheme is aligned to the Sport Unlimited programme, which forms part of the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP). By working with selected County Sports Partnerships, Jenna’s role is to increase sports participation, retain the young people on the programme and successfully transition them into sustainable club sport.

Coaching

Jenna is an established national and international coach. She currently coaches at Rampworx skate park on a regular basis, with one of her most rewarding roles being working with the skate park to establish the first and only ‘all girls’ inline skating coaching academy in an attempt to get young, disadvantaged girls off the streets and into sport. Due to the success of this Jenna now regularly runs ‘girls only’ coaching clinics and taster sessions, knowing full well how important it is for young people to have a positive role model to look up to. Jenna also takes part in summer clinics at Rampworx, helping individuals of all ages and genders with their skills, diet, fitness and general conduct to encourage a healthy lifestyle and assist in personal development.

Check out the video from Ladies Day that took place last year at Rampworx. Ladies Day takes place annually at the skatepark and is all about celebrating female participation in sports. At the event Jenna runs her own coaching clinics and taster sessions in a bid to encourage more girls to have a go at inline skating.

You can also catch Jenna over at Camp Woodward in the USA (the world’s biggest extreme sports camp) where she spends most of her summers training and instructing others, as well as using the world class facilities for her own training.

Jenna is also available for one-on-one coaching. Please contact Jenna for more information.

Jenna has been a rider on Team Extreme for over 10 years now and has featured in various high profile displays including shows for Walt Disney, a Robinson’s Fruitshoot campaign, and Dairylea ‘Get Good’ camps to name a few. Jenna is also a regular coach on the team.

Jenna is also one of the performers on Xtreme Action. Last year Jenna performed at Thorpe Park over the easter break along with some of the best bmxers and fmx moto-x athletes in the country in a thrilling, gravity-defying show that left the crowds on the edge of their seats!

Testimonials

Jenna Downing"I have worked personally with Jenna for over 6 years now on a variety of different In Line skate projects; including summer clinics, jams and outreach projects. During this time I have seen that Jenna has a natural affinity with young people, sharing their determination, enthusiasm and commitment to having fun and enjoying their sport. It is clear that she enjoys working and developing the skills and confidence of the young people that she works with. She shows tremendous patience and positivity to those around her including staff, young people and fellow coaches. As a female role model, Jenna is particularly popular with young females who she worked tirelessly with Rampworx to encourage into and stay within In Line skating".

"I really wanted to write and thank you for all your hard work, patience and skating expertise on our Frosties shoot. Without your skill and help I’m sure we would never have achieved the fantastic results we have got.

Most importantly it was also a very memorable and fun shoot to be involved with, and I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did.".

"I am writing somewhat belatedly, but equally sincerely nevertheless, to thank you for attending out Sports Centre Official Opening on 13th March.
Your contribution during the day with pupils from our partner primary schools, with students from Park Lane Special School and with our own students here at Macclesfield High School, was superb. You made the occasion very memorable and “cool” for them.

You speech to mark the Official Opening was sincere and motivating, as was your brief presentation at our school assembly. Your visit with pupils at Ash Grove Primary School that morning was enjoyed by all, and was an exciting extension to their normal curriculum.

In short Jenna, you were brilliant on the day and I simply wanted to express my sincere thanks to you on behalf of the Macclesfield Learning Zone partners for a “job well done.”

Wishing you continued success Jenna..".

“We would like to thank you Jenna for presenting a tremendously inspiring speech, presenting the awards, and for talking to the young people when you weren’t able to give a skate demonstration due to the weather at the North Lincolnshire Leisure Awards on 11 March 2008, which took place at Epworth Leisure.

The evening was a great success and was enjoyed by all who organized and attended.

Without your help the event wouldn’t have been as magnificent as it was.

Thank you and well done!".
